June 13, 1934: "E.S. Kerby, ranger at Mapleton, reported that he is building telephone line to Herman peak, located on the divide between Cape creek and the north fork of the Siuslaw, and a lookout house will be built on the peak as soon as the road which is now being worked on by C.C.C. crews is finished, Supervisor Shelley said." September 21, 1934: “The wire on the Forest Service line between Mercer lake and Clover mountain, use of which was discontinued last spring, was taken out Wednesday by CCC men and will be restrung between Baldy mountain and lookout and the new lookout at Three Buttes.” (Siuslaw Oar)

1934: A round pole timber tower with an L-4 model 1931 cab constructed.
August 31, 1941: "The five man crew (Forest Service) has been doing general maintenance work such as installing lightning protection on the Goodwin Peak lookout station." (The Eugene Guard)
1960: A 41-foot treated timber tower with an R-6 flat roof cab erected.
1973: Last year the lookout was staffed.
April 1976: The lookout dismantled and the cab trucked to Iron Mountain, where it was lifted by helicopter to the top of the peak and re-assembled.
