May 16, 1936: "A CCC crew, working under forest service officials, will soon start construction of a fire lookout station on Deerhead Point. This point, one of the highest peaks in this vicinity, is located between Harvey creek and McAfee creek on the north side of the Umpqua river. Material for the station will have to be taken to the site from the Frank Leach place, a distance of about three miles. Other lookout stations in this vicinity are Roman Nose, Ferntop and Dean's mountain, a lookout being maintained on each during the fire season." (The Coos Bay Times)
