July 21, 1915: "Ranger Oney has constructed a spur telephone line about one-third mile in length from the Crane Prairie line to the summit of Bates Butte, a small hill near the Big River Station which Mr. Oney uses for a secondary lookout point. The first call over this line came in on July 7th." (The Deschutes Ranger)
May 20, 1924: William Beaton had been transferred permanently to Paulina Peak from his temporary post on Bates Butte.
August 5, 1927: An intermediate lookout was stationed at Bates Butte due to extreme fire danger.
