AKERS BUTTE
Wallowa County - Oregon Department of Forestry - 3N-42E-28
August 21, 1930: "Melvin, Lillian and Ethel Carper and Gladys True visited Harvey McDonald at the Akers lookout last Tuesday. Harvey is fire warden and is stationed at the top of the summit at the Akers lookout." (La Grande Evening Observer)
September 22, 1930: "Harvey McDonald, who has worked this summer as a fire warden at the Akers Lookout, returned to his home Thursday. For several days he was quite ill but is improving now." (La Grande Evening Observer)
April 28, 1933: "Mr. Rice wishes to build a cabin on Akers lookout which I think is badly needed and he has most of the lumber that can be picked up from old camps. It would be necessary to buy the doors, windows, etc. and I told him to make out a bill and get a bid in Wallowa and submit the bill to this office.
Following his statement in regard to the Akers lookout: 'We need a cabin and tower at Akers L.O. With material we have now at the lookout, I believe that about $42.00 would buy the new material needed to construct a 14x18 cabin and a 40 foot tower. It would take about $60.00 in regular wages and $15.00 for extra labor." (P.S. King Field Report)
July 18, 1933: "We went up to Akers lookout where Mr. Rice has constructed a 38-foot tower and a new cabin. He has a very substantial tower and he used a method I never seen before of guying it. He guyed from the outside post across the center of the tower. This makes his guy lines shorter and I believe much stronger. The tower gives him a much better view of the entire district that is visible from this point. It is impossible to see directly north as the timber has not been cut, but Mr. Rice expects to cut a couple of old white firs that will help his visibility somewhat. He built a very good cabin and bought very little lumber." (P.S. King Field Report)
October 1, 1933: "A 14 x 18-foot frame cabin and a 40-foot pole lookout tower have been completed on the Akers Lookout." (The Forest Log)
June 1940: "Harvey McDonald, warden located at the Wallowa station of the northeast Oregon unit, writes in that the region suffered a windstorm the fore part of March that was tornado-like in intensity. The wind was so strong that it tilted the Ackers Lookout and warped the walls so severely that it will require considerable work to repair the building." (The Forest Log)
