June 9, 1922: "Pat Thompson and Ranger McEntire installed a chaser lookout finder on the west end of Flagtail. In lieu of a tower an old juniper was utilized. The top was cut off about 25 feet above the ground, the firefinder oriented, and a platform built for the observer. This peak, together with about 4 or 5 others will be used in smokey or hazy weather when the primary lookouts are unable to see." (Blue Mountain Eagle)
1934: A 20-foot round timber tower with an L-4 cab was constructed.
September 1, 1966: "Flagtail lookout is located atop Flagtail Mountain on the Bear Valley Ranger District. Contract requires erection of a 55-foot treated timber tower and house. Materials have already been supplied by previous contracts.
This lookout is in a key location for fire detection purposes and is the only contract of its type this year in the northwest. F.G. Scott Construction Co. of Salem was the low bidder with $8,808." (Blue Mountain Eagle)

1966: "Construction of Flagtail Lookout on the Bear Valley District was completed this year.
Flagtail is one of the Forest's 14 lookouts manned during the summer season. Lookout coverage is supplemented by spotter plane flights made following lightning storms and during other periods of high fire danger." (1966 Annual Report)
1973: The lookout contributed 16 hours to Sand and paint stairs, paint handrails and paint propane tank and flagpole. One gallon of gray floor and deck paint, One gallon propane tank paint. (Malheur National Forest files)

THIS INTERSECTED STATION IS ON THE HIGHEST AND WESTERN PART OF
FLAGTAIL MOUNTAIN AND ABOUT 5 MILES AIR LINE WESTERLY FROM BEAR
VALLEY RANGER STATION. THERE IS AN OPEN RIDGE TO THE S AND W
AND TIMBER TO THE N AND E. THERE IS A TRUCK TRAIL TO THE
SUMMIT. THE STATION IS MARKED BY A U.S.F.S. BRONZE DISK SET IN
THE TOP OF A CONCRETE POST. THE CENTER OF WEST FLAGTAIL LOOKOUT
TOWER, A 20-FOOT STRUCTURE WITH HOUSE ON TOP, IS 6.1 METERS
(20 FEET) DUE W OF THE STATION IN AZIMUTH 90 DEG. IT IS 14.5
FEET FROM THE STATION NW TO THE NE LEG OF THE TOWER, AND 23.5
FEET EASTERLY TO THE NW CORNER OF THE GARAGE.
