July 8, 1914: "Telephone lines built by the forest service this spring are now in operation, covering twenty-two miles, (including) two and one-half miles from Butte Falls to Santiam lookout. Rangers for lookout stations were sent out the first of the month." (Medford Mail Tribune)
November 20, 1933: "Assistant Supervisor Norman C. White of the Rogue River national forest, and State Fire Warden Dwight Phipps are spending today in the Santiam Peak section above Butte Falls, seeking a new lookout station location." (Medford Mail Tribune)
July 13, 1934: "Mr. and Mrs. Ira Tungate and Edgar, LeRoy and Thelma Tungate went to the lookout station on the other side of Ashland to work for a month or six weeks. When the lookout station is completed at Santiam they will be in charge of it." (Medford Mail Tribune)
