CORNUCOPIA PEAK
Baker County - Wallowa-Whitman National Forest - 6S-45E-29
April 11, 1922: "A lookout station will be established this summer on Cornucopia mountain, in the northeast part of this county, to watch for forest fires. Forestry work this year will include the improvement of two roads to the top of Cornucopia mountain and the fire station at the top of this peak will be the only one in this district which can be reached with a horse and vehicle. A telephone line is now being built to the summit. About 20 men will be employed by the forestry service in this district during the summer." (The Oregonian)
February 10, 1923: "Appropriations for the construction of telephone lines and building have not yet been definitely set as to the amount according to Mr. Ramsdell but it is certain that a standard lookout house will be erected on the summit of Cornucopia mountain at an altitude of 8600 feet." (La Grande Observer)
April 1923: "Shortly after being located on the new Cornucopia Mountain station, Lookout Magill reported a small fire just off the Summit Creek road and seven miles distant from the lookout station. The McBride fireman made a quick trip and thorough search but could find no fire and reported back. Magill insisted he could see a small volume of black smoke as though from a burning pitch stump or snag. This time on nearing the reported location, the fireman heard the chugging of a gas engine just beyond a fir thicket, however, he saw a balky gas wood saw throwing a young smoke screen and no fire to be found. The fireman had passed close by on his first search but unfortunately at a time when the troublesome engine was failing to chug." (Six Twenty-Six)

September 23, 1930: "Mr. Beard and daughter, Wilma, will leave in a week or so for Eugene where they will spend the winter." (Baker County Record)
July 25, 1939: "A razor blade and a pair of tweezers were used Sunday afternoon at the Cornucopia forest service lookout station to extricate a bullet from the shoulder of Clarence Elliott of Keating, but so far the person who fired the shot has not been found.
The extent of the wound was minor.
State Police officer Irvin Campbell said evidently a shot was fired by someone at a bird and the bullet spent itself and completed its course in Elliott's shoulder." (The Oregonian)
