May 23, 1916: "About 17 miles of new telephone line is to be constructed this summer in District No. 4 of the Siuslaw national forest to connect the Elk's Peak lookout station with the Gardiner headquarters. Work is to begin after the annual appropriation reaches the supervisor's office in July. By means of the new telephone line the lookout can notify the district headquarters at Gardiner of the location of fire anywhere within site of the lookout station." (Morning Register)
May 28, 1916: "Expensive preparation to protect the Siuslaw National forest in Western Lane County from fire is to be made during the early part of the summer, according to an announcement made by Supervisor Rankin. About 17 miles of new telephone line will be constructed to connect the Elks' peak lookout station with the Gardiner headquarters, he stated. The new line will enable the lookout to notify the Gardiner office of a fire anywhere within the district. The greatest danger from fire is during the month of August.
The Siuslaw National forest covers 821,000 acres, extending 150 miles along the coast and east to the summit of the Coast Range." (Sunday Oregonian)
August 16, 1916: "This trail will be a continuation of the government trail leading out of Schofield over Dean's mountain, extending to Elk's Peak, where a lookout point is to be established. A branch trail will leave the main trail a few miles north of Elk's Peak intersecting the Allegany-Scottsburg wagon road five miles south of Ash postoffice." (Morning Register)
July 8, 1921: "Six fire finding instruments for as many lookout stations were sent out by the Siuslaw national forest today. The instruments consist of a large map of the lookout district on which is mounted a circle graduated in degrees, and a sighting apparatus. Angle readings are taken by the lookouts and telephoned to headquarters where the fire is located by the intersection method. One of these instruments went out to Elks Peak." (The Eugene Daily Guard)
