August 4, 1912: "Since May 1 the association has constructed about 40 miles of telephone lines and many miles of trails connecting lookout stations with the local lines and roads." One of three lookout stations is Horse Rock, south of Crawfordsville. (Morning Oregonian)
April 15, 1913: "New lookout stations which have just recently been built to which have been constructed telephone lines are numerous and scattered in such a way that they practically take in every section of timber in the belt. One line has been built from Crawfordsville to Horse Rock on the summit of the divide between the Calapooia and the Mohawk rivers, with Elmer Fox in charge of the lookout station on Horse Rock." 1913: "One lookout in the Southern part of the county is maintained jointly by the association and timber owners in Lane County." (Third Annual Report of the State Forester - 1914)
August 1936: "A new telephone line is starting at Holley and is being constructed to Horse Rock, a distance of 18 miles. In years past a lookout in the station on Horse Rock was forced to travel seven miles to contact a telephone after a fire was sighted." (The Forest Log)
