August 12, 1965: "The Cottonwood Mountain Lookout located in Northeastern Malheur County is on some of the highest ground in the Vale BLM district. This summer it is being manned by two Burnt River Valley girls. They are Wilma Morgan, official lookout and Margie Elliott, assistant lookout.
They use several different instruments in scanning for fires. They can survey hundreds of square miles stretching out below their station. Included in the areas under their observation is most of the Lower Snake River Valley.
The girls have a battery-powered, transistorized shortwave radio being their only link with the 'outside world.'
Their water is trucked to them from Vale. They have a butane gas operated refrigerator, also a modern gas-operated range. Their onlu source of light is a gasoline lantern.
The girls work 5 days a week with weekends off, usually spent at their homes. They have a transistor radio with which they keep up with the current events and news and with whatever else is new. (The Record-Courier)
